As behavior analysts, it’s easy to get caught up in the science—tracking data, updating programs, analyzing behavior patterns. We’ve worked hard for our degrees, paid more than we probably should have, and poured ourselves into clinical excellence. But in the middle of all that, we can lose sight of something important: we work in a human field. And that means we need to show up for the humans in it—not just our clients, but our staff too.
RBTs and behavior technicians are the heartbeat of our work. They’re the ones in the sessions day in and day out, handling the tough moments, celebrating the small wins, and often doing it without much recognition. The truth is, pay isn’t enough to keep someone in this job. What does make a difference is feeling seen, supported, and valued by the people who supervise them.
It only takes a few minutes to show your staff you care. Take time during sessions to talk to them—not about data, but about how they’re doing. Remind them you’ve been where they are. Say thank you. Acknowledge their effort. Be present. Close the laptop for a moment and join the work alongside them. That small gesture might be what helps them get through a rough week, and even what keeps them in the field.
This job isn’t easy for any of us. The emotional load is real, and the burnout is high. But connection can be a powerful antidote. When we take care of each other, we do better work for our clients. When we show up for our teams, they’re more likely to stick around—and thrive.
So let’s not forget the people behind the protocols. Let’s bring humanity back into supervision. Let’s lighten each other’s load, lift each other up, and keep it together—together.
